Diploma in English

Introduction

The Diploma in English is a one-year weekend programme, designed for those employed in the public and private sectors and also for school leavers. The programme provides the necessary advanced language skills for those in employments whose professional advancement in English language would be essential and for those who seek employment opportunities.

This programme provides an opportunity for school leavers with G.C.E. O/L & G.C.E. A/L qualifications to improve their expertise in English language, English literature and Communication skills. It would enable the learners to strengthen their chances of finding suitable employment. The programme also intends to develop their personality, interpersonal skills and soft skills such as adaptability, decision making ability and organizational ability which are considered as important requirements to meet the employment prospects.

Programme Objectives

• It enables the participants to acquire a good command of English which will equip them with competency and proficiency in the target language.
• It would help the participants to gain confidence and applying the language skills particularly when:

  expressing themselves at public and private forums.

  making presentations.

  dealing with day-to-day activities.

  writing formal letters and informal letters.

  writing project proposals and report.
• creating an opportunity for the professionals and school leavers to further continuing their English education and develop their language skills in the target language.

Course Contents

Structure of the Diploma Program

The Diploma Program is of one year duration, and conducted through blended mode. The curriculum of Diploma Program is designed to suit the various language needs of the learners in the modern contexts and the current challenges that are taking place in technological transformation in the global academic setting.

The Diploma is considered as a way forward for widening the access to higher education to masses at an affordable cost on conditions that are flexible to students. In this context, designing of the structure, curriculum and examination of the entire Diploma Program through blended mode using a combined mode of delivery, namely face to face instructions, self-learning initiatives depended on printed learning material supplemented by on-line and computer-based learning resources.

Each course is taught and assessed based on Intended Learning Outcome (ILO) and Students Centered Learning (SCL) and examination during the course and at the end of the semester.
